A Short Guide to Publishing a Law Review Article

This Guide offers information and advice about the process of submitting a law review article article to student-edited law journals, with a heavy emphasis on the logistical and strategic elements of law review submissions. It draws on my experience navigating the law review submission process over 40 times, beginning more than two decades ago as a law student and continuing to the present day in my role as a law professor and research dean.

The Guide is structured around fifteen piece of advice, each of which is explored in detail:

1. Write a good article.

2. Pay attention to word count.

3. Carefully consider the timing of your submission.

4. Get familiar with Scholastica.

5. Format your article appropriately.

6. Pick a great title.

7. Invest in your abstract, table of contents, introduction, and cover letter.

8. Update your CV.

9. Gather your materials in advance.

10. Target journals strategically.

11. Be patient!

12. Receive an offer and expedite strategically.

13. Negotiate your offer.

14. Accept your offer and decline other offers graciously.

15. Promote your research!

Appendices to the Guide analyze the abstract, introduction, and cover letters to some of my own articles.

My hope is that the Guide will be especially helpful to early-career scholars, including students, while also providing some new ideas for experienced legal scholars.
